Gas tankless water heater installation means putting in a unit that heats water on demand using natural gas or propane, which delivers higher flow rates and faster recovery than electric tankless models. Gas units are the go-to choice for larger households or whole-home applications because they can keep up with multiple fixtures running at once, but the installation itself is more involved than electric since it means proper gas line sizing, venting, and combustion safety.
Most homeowners considering this are replacing an aging tank water heater and want endless hot water without running out mid-shower, or they're building new and want to skip the tank altogether. If your gas line or venting isn't currently sized for a tankless unit's demands, that's the first thing we check, since gas tankless units draw significantly more BTUs than a standard tank water heater and often need a larger gas line to perform properly.
We start by confirming your existing gas line can supply enough BTUs for the tankless unit you're installing – this step gets skipped by some installers and it's exactly why some tankless installs never quite perform right. We check or upsize gas line sizing as needed, confirm proper venting for combustion byproducts through either a traditional flue or direct vent depending on the unit, and mount the unit with correct water connections. Every gas connection gets pressure tested for leaks before we consider the job done, and we verify proper draft and venting operation, since that's a safety issue as much as a performance one.
Cost depends on the unit's capacity, whether your existing gas line and venting are adequate or need upgrading, and any code requirements specific to your area. Older homes in Lindenhurst, IL sometimes need gas line upsizing or venting updates to meet current code, which we'll flag during the initial assessment rather than as a mid-installation surprise.
